When I set out to make “No Woman, No Cry,” a documentary film about the Global state of maternal health three years ago, I had no idea just how dismal a job we were doing for our nation’s families. I was inspired to highlight the under-reported issue of maternal mortality after learning that almost all of the hundreds of thousands of maternal deaths that occur each year are preventable. Yes, 90 percent! And yet, when I came to know these facts, I discovered that little progress had been reported (for decades) in many countries around the world.
We, as a global community, could and should be doing more if we value our women. The majority of the global burden of maternal deaths occurs in the developing world. In fact, 66% occur in just 11 countries. While this statistic is an unjust reality, it may not be all that surprising. What did rattle me was the fact that the United States was ranked behind 40 other countries with regard to maternal care, leaving us in 41st place. As recently as last year, this number has dropped again. According to new UN data released late last year, we now find ourselves behind 49 other countries, positioning ourselves in 50th place when it comes to a woman’s risk of dying from complications during pregnancy and childbirth.

We stayed on in San Francisco for an additional day and even though the rain seemed to stay with us, our spirits were anything BUT dampened.
We started out Friday morning driving out to Antioch, CA to meet up with some friends at Containers to Clinics (C2C) and their partners at Allied Container Systems. Their collaboration is all about innovation and it was exciting to see the containers in person after learning about C2C’s founder Elizabeth Sheehan’s mission. The whole idea behind C2C is to utilize shipping containers not just as a vessel to send life-saving medical equipment and supplies overseas, but to make the shipping container itself a fully functional clinic. These two organizations are already partnering to send container clinics to Haiti, where C2C is already providing medical care on the grounds of what used to be a Children's hospital in Port au Prince. Now they're working on improving the prototype and taking the project to scale. This is a unique model and one that can revolutionize access and treatment for families especially those who are far from a facility.

We were certainly sleepless in Seattle when we woke up early on day 2 of our 5-day, 3 city Every Mother Counts tour. Second stop, a place I know quite well, San Francisco! It’s always nice to come home to the Bay Area where I was born and raised.
After landing into SFO we headed directly to the Google Campus in Mountain View to screen a portion of "No Woman, No Cry" and participate in a Q&A with the Googlers who came out to see the film. We were also lucky to have a few moments before the fireside chat to meet with the women leaders of Google, who represent a broad array of functions and skill sets across the entire organization. Needless to say, Google has a profoundly impressive group of women at their organization.

We arrived in Seattle yesterday morning to clear skies and sunshine, leaving rainy New York City behind (didn’t expect that!). We headed straight to the Gates foundation where I was invited by Dr. Gary Darmstadt, Director of the Family Health Division to screen a clip of No Woman, No Cry and give a brief talk during a town hall about social and behavioral change. It was my first visit to the foundation and an exciting opportunity for me to share my observations about these particular barriers through my experience making the film. It was such a thrill to finally visit the Gates Foundation after admiring their work for so long.

From USAID I headed over to the Hilton for the CARE National Advocacy conference.
This was my third year participating in this always exciting, ever expanding and highly motivational advocacy conference.
Helene Gayle, the dynamic President and CEO of CARE, introduced Melinda French Gates, Founder of the Melinda & Bill Gates Foundation, who was one of this year's many incredible keynote speakers, which also included Melanne Verveer, US Ambassador for Women’s Issues, Former First Lady Laura Bush, and USAID’s Dr. Rajiv Shah. Melinda received a standing ovation when she approached the podium to speak.

The 100-year anniversary of International Women's Day festivities and events kicked off Women's History month with more than a boom yesterday. What an exciting week for girls and women!
I was honored to be invited to submit an Op-Ed in yesterday’s Huffington Post among such inspiring women on such an important day for all of us, especially those dedicated to improving the lives of girls and women around the world. The collective messages from all were clear - we have much to celebrate but a long way yet to go. Let us share from hard lessons learned and use innovations in technology and science to quicken the pace for the next 100 years. And so, yesterday morning I took the train from NYC to Washington, DC to participate in today’s 2011 CARE National Advocacy Conference and also to attend the launch of a new USAID initiative.

No Woman, No Cry a new documentary produced and directed by first-time filmmaker Christy Turlington Burns, will have its television debut on OWN; Oprah Winfrey Network Saturday May 7, at 9:30 p.m. (ET/PT) the evening before Mother’s Day. The emotionally charged film follows the stories of women in Tanzania, Bangladesh, Guatemala and the United States as they face critical junctures in their pregnancies. The film explores the barriers millions of women face when trying to access critical care throughout their pregnancies and while delivering, along with the often simple solutions that could save their lives.
Turlington Burns, a mother, activist, women’s health advocate and fashion icon, made the film in conjunction with EVERY MOTHER COUNTS (EMC), a five-year outreach campaign she founded in 2010 that is dedicated to improving maternal health and reducing maternal mortality around the world by engaging the public, raising awareness and driving action.
