To raise awareness and childbirth survival rates
Does anyone want to join Christy Turlington Burns, Oprah, CAREand me for a great big Mother’s Day party? It’ll be a casual affair - just dinner and a movie with friends on Saturday May 7th. We’ll gather early for drinks and a potluck (I’m thinking mac and cheese) while we listen to some music (Every Mother Counts– a Starbucks compilation CD that includes performances by Gwyneth Paltrow, The Dixie Chicks, Martha Wainright, Jennifer Lopez, Madonna and a stellar collection of other mothers). Then we’ll settle onto the couch to watch No Woman, No Cry – the television broadcast premiere of Christy’s kick-ass documentary about maternal health challenges around the world - here in the United States and abroad.

Every Mother Counts is thrilled to announce a new feature of www.everymothercounts.org- the Share Your Story page. This interactive online collage includes stories of moms from around the world who are all connected. Using stories, photos, tweets, and videos, the wall is a place to share your own story or a story of a mom you love and reflect on how universal the experience of pregnancy, childbirth and even motherhood truly are. Explore the wall, read the stories, but more importantly-post your own! This wall is a great way to engage on the issue and be a part of the Count Me In! Campaign. The only thing missing is you!

The Every Mother Counts CD compilation features 15 songs by 14 mother/musicians. We asked them to contribute an original song or a cover around the theme of motherhood.
It could be anything they wanted, and many chose to tackle lullabies or wrote songs for their children. Early on, I worried a bit about an album supporting an issue as serious as maternal mortality, as it could potentially become a heavy listen. But thankfully I found the resulting record veers back and forth between the sweet and the bittersweet, capturing a richness and a greater complexity – exactly like life.

In order to make a difference, Every Mother Counts has partnered with Save the Children to train more midwives in the country with the highest maternal mortality rates in the world—Afghanistan. Afghanistan is one of the riskiest places on earth for the health of mothers and children. Only 14 percent of births are attended by skilled personnel and maternal and child mortality rates are among the highest in the world. Afghan women face a 1 in 8 risk of dying from complications during pregnancy and childbirth.

All Sides with Ann Fisher is a two-hour, daily public-affairs talk show designed to – over time – touch upon all sides of the issues and events that shape life in central Ohio. Listeners participate via telephone, e-mail, Twitter and text messaging, to add to the conversations. As always at WOSU, the coverage is fair and balanced with a civil tone.
Topics are driven by the top news stories of the day – local, regional, national and international -- and the trends in what we read and what we like to eat, where we worship and play, and more. Local issues and news-related topics tend to dominate the first hour with larger issues and authors saved for the second.

August 2009. Vogue magazine had a profile on Christy Turlington Burns. Mother. Director. Activist, and yes, something about being a Supermodel, too. What struck me most in reading this article was her passion for the issue of maternal health and the fact that she was using her name and influence for a greater good.
After her own experience of giving birth with complications, she had chosen to bring greater awareness to the issue by directing and co-producing No Woman, No Cry, a documentary about maternal health. It tells the compelling stories of at-risk pregnant women in four parts of the world (Tanzania, Bangladesh, Guatemala and the United States).
Moved and inspired by her message and by my wife’s life-threatening experiences giving birth to both my sons, I pondered how Starbucks could support this profound project – to bring a greater spotlight on the conditions and complications surrounding childbirth worldwide and to help reduce the hundreds of thousands of women who die every year as a result of inadequate care. One of the U.N.’s Millennium Development goals is to reduce maternal mortality by 75% by the year 2015.

I believe that each of us is born with unlimited and untapped potential to give of ourselves.
I also believe that one’s sense of service can be innate and instilled. Of course, this potential must be ignited before it can be realized. When I look inward asking what ignited mine, the answer that always surfaces is my Mother.
