As the saying goes...there is no rest for the weary... yesterday was a BIG day for maternal, newborn and child health. It started off with rushing my kids out the door and off to school downtown, then racing uptown to get to an event titled "Maternal Health in Crisis" which took place across from the UN (not an easy area of town to access this week). The event primarily focused on health workers as a critical and attainable solution to reducing preventable deaths for moms, babies and children under five. I was invited to speak at the event by my friend Ann Starrs, who runs Family Care International, and who was also one of our expert advisers on the documentary film "No Woman, No Cry."

Ah New York in the fall. The air is crisp, the kids are excited to be back in school and I get my own back to school week when the world comes to town for the UN General Assembly. It's sort of a strange phenomenon- the UN GA provides a great opportunity to reflect on global leaders' commitments to a number of development challenges including maternal health- but it also means that many other organizations hold events that compete for heads of state and other notables which makes for a very FULL week seeing everyone working on similar issues.

Every Mother Counts is an advocacy and mobilization campaign to increase education and support for maternal and child health. Every Mother Counts seeks to engage new audiences to better understand the challenges and the solutions while encouraging them to take action to improve the lives of girls and women worldwide. Every Mother Counts is still a very small organization but has offices in both New York and Washington, DC. This position will work out of our DC location, under the supervision of the Executive Director.

Fashion icon and women's health activist, Christy Turlington Burns will participate in the ING New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 6 to raise money and awareness for her non-profit organization, Every Mother Counts.
To put things in to perspective globally, for each of the 16,000 female runners that participated in last year's marathon, two times the number of women die due to childbirth related causes each month. Hundreds of thousands of women die during pregnancy and childbirth each year, and 90% of these deaths can be prevented if given the proper tools and resources.

This morning I got up before my kids were awake for school to travel down to Washington, DC to participate in The Bush Institute's, Summit to Save Lives. For all the varying opinions and political beliefs people may have with regard to President Bush, no one can argue that his putting global health issues on the map is anything short of commendable. Through PEPFAR (the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief) and PMI (the President's Malaria Initiative), he prioritized the scaling up of life saving efforts in some of the poorest and most affected countries in the world.
