I am two months into my six-month mission in northern Nigeria. My world here is small: base, hospital, base. I walk the path between them several times a day. At night our beat up Land Rover shuttles me back and forth bleary eyed. We work six days a week and I'm on call for two nights as well. Most calls I'm at the hospital for most of the night.
Our two main services here are emergency obstetrics and obstetric fistula repair. I spend my days and nights supervising the local midwives and managing the emergencies that come through the door. I have to step back from the experience from time to time.

She's a supermodel, wife, mother, philanthropist, and she runs her own charity devoted to maternal health. But now, Christy Turlington Burns is focusing on getting support for less fortunate pregnant woman in developing nations.
Fifteen hundred women die from pregnancy or child-birth complications every day, according to the World Health Organization. Turlington explores the issue in her new documentary "No Woman, No Cry."
Alina Cho speaks to Turlington Burns about how she became interested in maternal health and why she decided to make this film on American Morning today.

After my first run (this morning) since marathon Sunday, I feel inspired to revisit and share my experience with all of you who lovingly supported Team EMC and our efforts on behalf of moms around the world who face countless daily challenges to provide for themselves and their families.
And I would be completely amiss if I did not acknowledge YOUR efforts around this marathon event.
I may have been just one of 47,000 people who ran the 42nd ING NYC Marathon on November 6th, but with your love and support we felt like an army and that's how we were able to have the reach that we did.

Like many Americans, my family just celebrated Halloween with all its tricks and excesses of treats. In all the excitement, an important piece of news may not have made it on to the radar screen for many of us, though it may represent a more shocking--and very real--Halloween worthy scare. The UNFPA estimated that this October 31 marked the approximate day that the world population passed the 7 billion mark. 7 billion. To some, that may sound like just an abstract number or an interesting factoid, but the truth is our global population growth will have serious implications for all of us and of course for our children and grandchildren.

As Marathon Monday approaches, here are some “Race Day Tips” from our friend at LUNA Bar , Jane Kibii. Originally from Kenya, Jane is a runner on the LUNA Pro Team and has won several major national events ranging from 5ks to half marathons. She ran her first marathon in 2009 and came in 5th place! As a native Kenyan, Every Mother Counts is an important cause for Jane and hits close to home. She says, “Thank you all for your support for Every Mother Counts. You are a reminder of the compassion and goodness in people.”
