BRAC was founded by Dr. Abed Faizel and is one of the most respected and largest NGOs in the world. We met a very pregnant Monica Begun through Yasmine, a BRAC community health worker on our first day filming in the slums in Dhaka in January of 2009 for "No Woman, No Cry."

From the moment we met Josh Nesbit and learned about Hope Phones, we knew it was a partnership that had legs. Hope Phones collects used cell phones (we all have at least 3 in a drawer somewhere, right?), recycles them and then uses the proceeds to purchase phones on the local market to equip health workers so they can better do their jobs.

The goal of the Million Moms Challenge is to be an amplifier for partners like Every Mother Counts, UNICEF, Save the Children and others. They create awareness, invite advocacy and fundraising on the many issues faced by mothers and children around the world – whether it’s improving nutrition for a pregnant mother, helping to train midwives or delivering life-saving vaccines to help children reach their 5th birthdays.

Yoga teacher Kyle Miller, a close friend of Every Mother Counts (EMC), and Yoga Vida owner, Michael Patton, wanted to give back to their community and thought EMC would be a great fit (also great since some of our EMC team practices at Yoga Vida).

I met Julie Smolyansky, CEO of Lifeway Foods, in the spring of 2010 at the Summit Series in Washington, D.C. She was then pregnant with her second child and I was about to premiere “No Woman, No Cry” at the TriBeca Film Festival. Julie and I stayed in touch and later, after I founded Every Mother Counts, I wrote her to tell her about what we hoped to achieve with our campaign.
