World-renowned soccer player Christie Rampone returns to the field for this summer’s 2012 Olympic Games. Christie is a mom of two girls, Rylie Cate (age 6) and Reece Elizabeth (age 2), whom she raises with her husband, Chris Rampone. In a recent interview held with the Los Angeles Times, Christie affirms that her girls are now her number one priority. Christie and fellow team member and mom, Abby Wambach, have both insisted on having their children accompany them to London this summer; a necessity that the US Soccer division has been happy to accommodate. US Soccer embraces female athletes’ commitments to their children, and has paid all expenses of the children and their accompanying nannies for the past 16 years. Spokesperson for the US Soccer team, Neil Buethe, applauds the current strategy of encouraging athletes to bring their children to the Games. "U.S. Soccer considers this an important element to help those players with children."

Our hearts go out to Paula Radcliffe, the marathon world record holder who just yesterday had to withdraw due to a flare-up of a foot injury. Paula is one of those inspiring women who does it all. She holds the world record in the marathon and is mother to 2 children— Isla (who she delivered after 27 hours of labor) and Raphael. We'll miss watching Paula compete and are sending our thoughts to her. She is still a champion and role model in our eyes though and it is in that spirit that we wanted to share a Q&A she did with us just two weeks ago as she was gearing up for the Games. Thank you, Paula, for being such an example of grace.

With the excitement of the opening of the 2012 Summer Olympics in the air today, Every Mother Counts would like to give shout-outs to a few Olympian moms whose inspirational stories, accomplishments, and personal achievements motivate us each day to do what we do for moms around the world. They symbolize so much for us all and in watching them achieve their dreams of being in the Olympic Games they are also encouraging us to reach our goals, and to fight for what we believe in. Like many of us, these women are juggling demanding schedules and managing their children's daily routines. And while the jury is still out on whether women really can have it all, these women are proving daily that they can be dedicated mothers AND world champions. What better way to celebrate the Summer of Sisterhood than cheering them on. Please join us in following these Olympic Moms. Together, we can make a difference.

“Little Bee,” a New York Times bestseller written by Chris Cleave, is the moving, unforgettable tale of a young Nigerian girl, Little Bee, who is haphazardly given the opportunity to escape her war-torn country and find refuge in the UK. “Little Bee” promotes the universal sentiments of love, spiritual connections shared between people, and the power of the shared human experience that transcends all racial, geographical, or cultural lines. The inherent strength and courage of this young girl to move forward through life given her strenuous circumstances is an inspiration to all readers, and reminds us that fate is an uncontrollable, mysterious force that is oftentimes unexplainable.

The International AIDS Society (IAS) kicked off it's biannual conference in Washington D.C. this week. These meetings are a really big deal for everyone working in the fight against HIV/AIDS and this year’s is especially noteworthy as we gather back here in the U.S. for the first time in over two decades. It's especially timely because scientists and activists alike are at a critical point where they can truly call for an ‘end to AIDS’.

I learned about Every Mother Counts from my friend and neighbor, Kathy Van Buskirk, and have been following this wonderful organization's activities over the past months. I love the Summer Bucket List and thought a lemonade stand the perfect way for my daughters and I to take action for EMC. Ava (6) and Bella (4) are lemonade stand aficionados by this point (I've drunk more watered down, warm lemonade over the past several years than is probably healthy), and were very enthusiastic about doing a summer project with a purpose. It didn't hurt that colored markers, flower drawing and posing for pictures was involved! I talked about the mission of EMC with the girls and even though maternal mortality is a topic that could be a little intimidating, they got the fact that every Mom should be able to have a healthy baby and be safe while delivering.

On Friday, July 20, I was thrilled to participate in the Vinson & Elkins DC Chili Cookoff. We always talk about the moms on this site but this time it was a dad to thank. A dad friend of mine from our kids' preschool, John Decker, called me out of the blue and asked what he could do to support Every Mother Counts. An accomplished chef himself, John came up with the idea of doing a chili cook-off at his law firm and turning it into a benefit for EMC.

I met with the legendary midwife Ina May Gaskin a few years back while researching US stories for "No Woman, No Cry.” I had first discovered her while pregnant and exploring natural childbirth and she is truly a pioneer in modern day midwifery. I later learned that she had become a leader in another birth-related movement, the movement to prevent maternal mortality here in the United States. Ina May has made it her life's work to offer literally thousands of women and families a safe, supported and empowering birth experience for decades. In the early 1990’s, Ina began collecting stories about women who had lost their lives during or following childbirth in the US. In honor of these mothers and their memory she started the Safe Motherhood Quilt Project. This quilt is a chilling reminder that women continue to die in childbirth in this country, many of which are preventable, needless losses of life. The quilt has also brought many of the families together, many of whom are actively advocating to improve maternity care for others.
