We juggled events at the Clinton Global Initiative and around the United Nations meetings this week, attending panel discussions and lectures, catching up with old friends, renewing acquaintances and finally putting faces to names and relationships we’ve been developing all year. This week was equal parts reunion, refresher course and educational intensive that served to reboot our commitment to expanding maternal health. It also showed us we’re on the right track and re-inspired us to keep moving forward. Pour yourself some coffee, this week was intense. Here’s a summary of some of the highlight events we attended.

We’re gearing up for the first International Day of the Girl with plans to spotlight issues girls face around the world, throughout October. And to get the ball rolling, we’re excited to announce Let Girls Be Girls – a photo contest. Send in your pictures (with parental permission, of course) of girls doing what girls do best – everything from biking, playing, singing, acting, talking, dancing, reading, cooking, shooting hoops, drawing, studying, skating, drumming, playing video games, playing guitar…whatever.

I hopped down from my rooftop perch aboard a decked out safari Land Cruiser, slung my bag of medical supplies over my shoulder and approached the “Health Centre Archer’s Post”. I was in a small town in the northern region of Kenya. Accompanying me, I had a Samburu Junior Elder, Alex, several family members (among them mydad, a retired surgeon and a niece in her premed studies) and our safari guides.

We knew we wanted to highlight Women Deliver's World Contraception Day post because Tanzania holds such a special place in our hearts. The country made such an impression on Christy when she first visited in 1990 that she has visited many times and filmed a portion of NWNC there in 2009. Christy has returned twice since then. In fact she was there just last month with her family. Each visit leaves a greater impression that leads to a deeper commitment to make motherhood safe. Read this post, then log on to our Family Planning educational toolkit to learn more about how contraception can change and empower the lives of women around the world.

All we asked was for 10,000 signatures and you guys blew us away. Right along with Brigid McConville of the White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood, Helene Gayle of CARE, Christy Turlington Burns and the Every Mother Counts team 15,800 of you signed the pledge, telling our leaders that you believe all women have a right to safe pregnancy and birth.

You asked, we delivered. After an outpouring of requests from Every Mother Counts’ supporters and music fans around the world, wondering how they can get their hands on Every Mother Counts two sold-out compilation CDs, we’re finally able to announce: Get your music and lend your support right here.

I didn’t know what was wrong with me when I was hospitalized in Mombasa’s Pandya Memorial Hospital after continuously throwing up for three days. “You’re three months pregnant,’ my doctor announced, smiling down at me. “Pregnant?” The mere thought that a life was growing inside my womb nearly brought me to my knees. It was a miracle. I couldn’t even describe what I was feeling in that moment. I had wanted a child for a while and now it seemed my prayers had been answered.

Today is the first day of "UNGA" week in NYC. While none of the Every Mother Counts team is actually attending any of the “official” United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) meetings (only Heads of State get to do that), there are so many other related events, meetings and educational sessions going on for regular folks like us, that people flock to NYC. Thousands of participants and attendees from all over the world run from meeting to meeting in the UN Secretariat Building as well as across town to CGI, the Clinton Global Initiative, where Heads of State, advocates, corporations and non-profits come together to discuss some of the world's more challenging international development problems.

Stories are about people and people deserve respect. Telling stories is never about inviting pity or exploitation. Telling the stories is always about opening the eyes of the world to the realties around us. Telling stories is about stirring hearts and inviting those with the means and the ability to join together in action to help respond to the need. Telling stories is about honoring the strength, courage, and resiliency of the people of Haiti. More than anything, we wish their battle were not so agonizing. We wish they had no need for such tenacity. We wish there were far fewer stories to tell.

Charity:Water turned six years old this September and in that short amount of time, they’ve turned on the water in 20 countries. While concurrently operating projects all over the world, they give special focus to one country per year. This year it’s Rwanda and in honor of their birthday, Charity:Water is holding a special campaign to raise $1.7 million dollars and 100 percent of the money they raise will be used to fund large-scale water systems in Rulindo District.
