With all of the great submissions we got for the Let Girls Be Girls photo contest it was hard for us at Every Mother Counts to decide which picture would win top honors. With much deliberation this lovely picture is the photo that won. Because lets face it, what could be more carefree than blowing bubbles!?

Alex Newbold is co-captain of team-EMC. A self-professed “numbers guy,” Alex works in finance by day and considers his role as co-mentor, motivator and organizer of our marathon team (with his brother, Nick Newbold) “his dream-volunteer job.” For Alex, running the marathon with Every Mother Counts is the perfect combination of doing something he believes in and doing something he loves. Team-EMC feels lucky to have him run with us every step of the way.

As we wrap up our month-long coverage about girls, we thought we’d close with what it really means to let girls be girls. One variable seems to be responsible for the majority of conflicts waged between the sexes. That variable is hormones. Hormones are chemical messengers that operate virtually every physiologic transaction happening in our bodies at any given moment. Many assume hormones are gender specific; that there are female hormones and male hormones, but actually men and women share all the same hormones.

Clancy McCarty has worn more hats at Every Mother Counts than almost anyone other than Christy. She started working with Christy fresh out of NYU's Gallatin school, Christy's alma mater, as a production assistant on No Woman, No Cry and graduated to Co-producer of the documentary by the time they wrapped the film. These days she's exercising many of her talents as Manager of Special Projects, which means, she has her finger on the pulse of everything that’s happening with every member of our team. That’s why we’re thrilled she’ll be running with Team-EMC for her first marathon this year.

We knew October was going to be a busy month and it's exceeding our expectations. Throughout October we blogged about a wide variety of subjects, but focused on the big four: International Day of the Girl, which we celebrated all month long, National Midwifery Week, several new partnerships and preparations for our 5Ks and the ING New York Marathon. In addition, we added new staff to the Every Mother Counts team. Wei Wei Liu is our new Business Development and Partnerships Manager. And, as they do, Christy and Erin kept their schedules packed with speaking engagements.

Sarah Bowen Shea runs like a mother, trains like a mother and runs the website, online community and virtual runner’s aid station known as AnotherMotherRunner.com – home base for thousands of mother-runners around the world. When Christy and Sarah connected on Twitter (@SBSontherun), Sarah invited Christy to join her and Dimity on AnotherMotherRunner radio to chat about running, marathon training, Every Mother Counts and how that all lines up with motherhood. After that conversation, it was only natural that Christy and Sarah would lace up their sneakers to run together. We caught up with Sarah once again in her hometown, Portland Oregon, where she juggles family life with three kids, her business and, of course, running.

Hard to believe, but NYC is so close we can smell the porta-potties! Before we fly out to the big city, we were excited to circle back for a little Q&A with our charity partner, Christy Turlington Burns and Every Mother Counts (EMC). If you haven't heard, EMC is a fantastic, women-led organization that focuses on maternal health around the world. As both the apparel sponsor and personal fans of EMC, we wanted to hear how Christy started marathoning, and how she feels about everything from training, to EMC, to NYC fashion week, and more...

Christy Turlington Burns took time to answer questions for Connect Savannah from New York City. She will be in town to discuss her film "No Woman No Cry" after it screens at the Savannah Film Festival Monday, Oct. 29.

As a pediatric oncology nurse at the University of California San Francisco Benioff Children’s Hospital, Amy Siegel’s dedication and generous spirit are inspiring. As a lifelong athlete and runner, Amy’s willingness to put in mile after mile is motivating. But it’s her big heart, brilliant mind and compassion for people that have made our friendship with Amy so special. Running the marathon with us for the second time, Amy’s dedication to Every Mother Counts motivates us to keep going the distance so we can serve mothers as well as Amy serves children and families going through cancer.

Every Mother Counts (EMC), an advocacy and mobilization campaign focused on maternal health, today announced its first grant partners, Baylor College of Medicine Children’s Foundation Uganda (Baylor Uganda) and Midwives for Haiti, marking a groundbreaking expansion for the organization. Both grants will support life saving measures on the ground, with Baylor Uganda’s grant of $41,146 providing transport vouchers for women in Uganda so they can reach health facilities while in labor and Midwives for Haiti’s grant of $54,000 covering the cost of training new students to become skilled birth attendants.
