As you travelled with us to Uganda last week, some of you asked, “How can we help?” Wouldn’t you know it, as soon as you asked, the answer popped into our inbox. We’ve been invited to join the Mozilla Firefox challenge!

Christy met Adele Sulcas in 2006 on a RED trip in Swaziland and have remained close. Adele’s work with the Global Fund to fight AIDS and her new mother status give her a heartbreaking perspective on why Getting to Zero (this year’s theme for World AIDS Day) is urgent. Here is Adele's story.

World AIDS day was first held in 1988 as the very first designated global health day. It’s now marked annually on December 1st to provide a worldwide opportunity to unite in the fight against HIV, support people living with HIV and commemorate those who’ve died. Currently, about 34 million people live with HIV. Almost 50% are women, 3.3 million are children and in developing countries where HIV/AIDS is rampant, most of them don’t know they’re infected. Often infected mothers will unknowingly transmit HIV/AIDs to their babies during childbirth or through breastfeeding but with proper treatment, an HIV positive mother's risk of passing the virus on to her child drops to 2%.

Distance is one of the biggest barriers to maternal care for women in the developing world—and we hope that with every mile we run for EMC, that is one less mile a pregnant woman needs to travel to get the care she needs to deliver her baby. Today, we’ve got even more reasons for you to join the team and run with us. A month ago we met Brae Blackley, corporate attorney turned mother, runner, and Executive Director of ZOOMA Women’s Race Series. ZOOMA is a national series of boutique women’s 5K/10Ks and marathons at awesome resorts in locations like Amelia Island in Florida, Cape Cod, and Austin.

#GivingTuesday is a new-ish holiday tradition we think is brilliant. After a long weekend of feasting, football and shopping, #GivingTuesday provides an opportunity to give back. Instead of focusing on all the things we need, #GivingTuesday focuses our attention on all kinds of opportunities to share with those who need us most.

Only rarely in life do you meet someone who exemplifies what it means to be all you can be. Dr. Robert Porges, MD, OB-GYN was that person and more. Dr. Porges passed away during Hurricane Sandy from lymphoma. This Thanksgiving, we’re grateful we could call Dr. Porges a friend, mentor and partner in our efforts to improve maternal health around the world. Through his example of a life well lived, Dr. Porges taught us that Every Moment Counts.

We asked a few brand new parents to share what they’re grateful for this Thanksgiving. Their stories offer fresh reminders of when our own children delivered that special brand of gratitude at the moment of birth when we realize mother and baby are both fine. And as far as we can tell, gratitude for our children never leaves, no matter how old they are.

It’s easy to find your gratitude when you’ve had a really great year. It’s harder when you’ve had a tough one. That’s why we’re so inspired by our friends, Jen and Linda, who survived Hurricane Sandy, but lost a home and a business. Despite losing it all, they’ve had no trouble finding their gratitude.

Why is transportation such a big priority when our goal is saving lives at birth? Because frequently, lack of transportation causes critical delays that lead to senseless deaths of mothers and babies, especially in rural areas. Without transport, women can’t get to a healthcare facility unless they walk. For anybody who has been through labor, ask yourself this: Could you walk 5k, 10k, even up to 40k when you’re nine months pregnant or in labor? Why should any mother have to?
