When Autumn Joy died at 22 weeks gestation from an umbilical cord anomaly, her mother, Debbie Haine, was shocked. As she delivered her baby and processed her grief, Debbie was astounded by how little awareness she’d had and conversation there was around the subject of stillbirth.

Zooma, Annapolis was the first of the Zooma race series I have attended. There was a lot of activity and people milling about as we set up our table during registration. Lots of people checked out our EMC running shirts and several people stopped by to see what Every Mother Counts was all about.

There was a new conversation that swirled throughout the Women Deliver conference in Kuala Lumpur last week. We touched on it with our blogs from the conference and it has now made its’ way to the Gates Foundation Impatient Optimists blog and the Family Care International blog.

Fynn and I visited Neema Baby House in Arusha Tanzania. Over half the babies there are in the orphanage because their mother’s died giving birth to them. It is incredibly sad, but their fathers are not equipped to care for a newborn (the most obvious thing is that they can’t feed them!) so in one fell swoop they loose not only their mamas, but their fathers and aunts and uncles, and are destined to a brutal life as an orphan from day one. It breaks my heart.

When I left on my sabbatical from work I had visions of rest, relaxation, and enjoying endless hours with my two children. I was exhausted and on the verge of collapse, which is what precipitated the need for a sabbatical in the first place. The next few months were about healing my mind, my body and my spirit (and getting A LOT of sleep!).

We were overwhelmed with support this May with so many people coming together to make Mother’s Day a huge success. In addition to the tremendous response we had to our Give a Thought campaign, we had plenty of big announcements, celebrations and events that made May a really big month for Every Month Counts.

Who are the people who surround you, support you and stand as witnesses to your life? Your family. But “family” isn’t so easy to define these days.

With a name like Every Mother Counts, one could assume that our organization is only interested in the health of moms. Mothers are indeed our primary focus but only because so many issues that contribute to the health of her whole being are not as they should be to guarantee safe birth outcomes.

The third day of the Women Deliver Conference offered a last chance to catch up with friends. Dr. Ariel Frisancho Arroyo, Dr. Suellen Miller, Alicia Yamin, JD, MPH and midwife Robin Lim made our final day in Kuala Lumpur unforgettable.
