Over the last couple of years I have met some pretty incredible people. Carey Socol is one of them. We met at outside of our kid’s school last fall a few weeks before I was to run my first marathon to raise funds and awareness about one of the biggest barriers to access reproductive health services - distance. Carey was running too, the 2011 NYC ING Marathon was to be her 20th marathon. It was too late at that point for her to join our team but she said she’d be happy to wear an Every Mother Counts jersey.

Thank you SO much for supporting us in the Mozilla Firefox Challenge on Crowdrise. With your contributions, we were able to raise $17,062 for Robin Lim's Bumi Sehat Clinic in Bali, Indonesia. Robin and her amazing team can continue building their new clinic to ensure that mothers and newborns receive the quality health care they deserve. Thanks again for continuing to stand by us and say that Every Mother Counts.

Just as I was finally taking a week to unwind late this summer, I got another one of those calls that changed my life. Our friends at Crowdrise checked in to ask, "Does Every Mother Counts want ten spots in the NYC Marathon?" There was no question that we did, but what I didn't realize was that I would also be running. Crowdrise is a crowd-sourcing platform through that we have been working with since Mother's Day and more recently worked with to raise funds to send a container of medical supplies to South Sudan. Being the great partners they are, they were offered several slots for the marathon to be used for charities and nicely thought of us.

Fashion icon and global maternal health advocate Christy Turlington Burns, along with a team of 9 other individuals, is participating in the ING New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 6 to raise money and awareness for her non-profit organization, Every Mother Counts (EMC). To further her commitment and elevate awareness for maternal and child health Christy is calling on supporters everywhere to create their own team, and participate in a 5K run/walk in their own town during the official ING New York City Marathon while the EMC team hits the pavement in New York City.
