Father's Day
June 17, 2012
When a woman dies because of a childbirth related complication, the family she leaves behind is emotionally devastated and her children suffer greatly. 287,000 girls and women die every year around the world from largely preventable causes when bringing life into the world. That's almost 800 women every day. These women are not only mothers, they are daughters, wives, sisters, friends....

Mother’s Day or Father’s Day? Hmmm. That’s a tough one. Not sure which one hurts more, though both do a terrific job of crystallizing the ever present reality that my kids’ mother, Galit, died five years ago and is never coming back. One might think that Mother’s Day would be the clear winner. Going to the cemetery to visit her grave and hearing my five-year old boy, Satya, curiously remark that we are going to see “Ema” (the Hebrew word for “mother”) is always painful. The fact that eating ice cream and looking at pictures over her grave is the only physical experience he has had, and will ever have, of his mother since she last kissed him before dying three days post-childbirth is crushing.

There is nothing like giving birth or co-parenting to make you realize the value in a good partner. I lost my father years before meeting my husband but somehow watching the way he loves our children makes me feel his fatherly love vicariously. What I love most about having a life partner is getting to share the love, joy and frustrations of being a parent. When we were to become parents, I caught the first glimpse of the kind of father my husband would be. I was lucky to have his support throughout the pregnancy and after the delivery when suddenly a complication arose and our elation at the surprise of meeting our baby girl faded into a different kind of unexpected emotion, fear about what was going to happen to me.

As people around the world celebrate Father’s Day, we should all remember that men cannot become fathers without mothers. For most people, becoming a father or mother is the greatest event in their lives. Yet tragically, every year hundreds of thousands of women (and shamefully even girls) die due to complications during childbirth. As described in detail on the Every Mother Counts website, the vast majority of maternal mortality can be prevented simply by ensuring all women receive proper maternal health care before, during, and after pregnancy.

To continue our theme for the month of June, “Every Partner Counts,” we’d like to highlight a couple of great organizations that are honoring Dads, this Father’s Day in very special way. Dad has plenty of ties. Forget the tools you were going to buy Dad, he’s already got plenty-and he doesn’t want to do home repair on his special day anyways. Please consider supporting these organizations as an alternative to a traditional Father’s Day gift this year.

The International Museum of Women, an online museum, is launching their latest exhibition: Papa. Papa explores the changing role of the modern dad, and will be the featured topic gallery through the end of June. In this new gallery, it discusses how fathers are adapting to changing family dynamics in cultures and countries around the world. The “Papa” gallery includes an essay by award-winning author Jeremy Adam Smith about how fatherhood has changed in the U.S., and what that means for families; a documentary by Zsuzsanna Geller-Varga called “Mr. Mom,” which follows a Hungarian family where the father is the primary caretaker; an interview with a man in Burundi who is defying misogynistic cultural expectations and opting for a more equitable marriage; and much more!

Support the LifeWrap Program in honor of a father to help support families around the globe. Donate by Friday June 17th and a beautiful Ecard will be sent to the honoree on your behalf.
Every year hundreds of thousands of women die from pregnancy and childbirth related complications. Almost all of these deaths occur in developing countries and most are preventable. The leading cause of death is obstetric hemorrhage; women bleed to death before they get the care they need. The LifeWrap Program utilizes first-aid devices that can save these women’s lives.
