When Christy Turlington Burns delivered her first child with a midwife in a New York City hospital, at first the experience seemed perfect. But an hour after baby Grace's 2003 birth, the placenta had not yet emerged, placing Turlington Burns in danger. The midwife called the obstetrician and together they ripped the organ from wall of her uterus. The pain was excruciating and she began to hemorrhage.
