The Global Education and Technology Health Summit (GET Health Summit) hosted at the UN Headquarters in New York City this February identified resources, solutions and ways to use technology to improve health care globally. It was ironic that the speakers themselves didn’t use technology, having been discouraged from using slides during their presentations in an effort to create a more interactive experience.

I hopped down from my rooftop perch aboard a decked out safari Land Cruiser, slung my bag of medical supplies over my shoulder and approached the “Health Centre Archer’s Post”. I was in a small town in the northern region of Kenya. Accompanying me, I had a Samburu Junior Elder, Alex, several family members (among them mydad, a retired surgeon and a niece in her premed studies) and our safari guides.

Across the eastern Horn of Africa, more than 11.6 million people are in need of emergency assistance to survive. The region is experiencing the worst drought in more than 60 years which has lead to cropfailure, the death of livestock and a surge in food prices. Millions of people in Ethiopia, Djibouti, Kenya and particularly in Somalia are affected. Last week, the United Nations declared famine in two regions of Somalia. As a result of the increasingly dire situation, more than 600,000 Somalis have fled to neighboring countries, a journey that can take on average 25 days and covers hundreds of miles to reach refugee camps and food and water. Reports indicate that nearly half of the children arriving at the refugee camps areacutely malnourished. Additionally, for those unable to make it to the refugee camps or arrive at camps that are at capacity, the outlying areas are also under extreme pressure to house severely malnourished populations.

But I recently realized that the complication I experienced after delivering my first child deepened that bond, giving me a true sense of the sisterhood that is motherhood and inspiring me to help women around the world who face similar situations in childbirth.
