Saving Mothers, Giving Life was launched with the goal of supporting countries where women are dying at alarming rates during pregnancy and childbirth to aggressively reduce maternal mortality. The effort intends to help mothers during labor, delivery, and the first 24 hours postpartum – the period when two out of every three maternal deaths and 45% of newborn deaths occur. Work is beginning in countries where maternal mortality rates are disproportionately high, starting in Uganda and Zambia.

This morning I got up before my kids were awake for school to travel down to Washington, DC to participate in The Bush Institute's, Summit to Save Lives. For all the varying opinions and political beliefs people may have with regard to President Bush, no one can argue that his putting global health issues on the map is anything short of commendable. Through PEPFAR (the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief) and PMI (the President's Malaria Initiative), he prioritized the scaling up of life saving efforts in some of the poorest and most affected countries in the world.

Two and a half years ago, I traveled to Bangladesh to film for my documentary, NO WOMAN, NO CRY. A year after the film's completion and world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2010, I have finally returned. This was the first country we visited while filming but the last to which we have brought it back. Bangladesh is also the furthest distance from New York, where I happen to live. To give you a sense of just how far away it is, I joined Erin Thornton, the Executive Director of Every Mother Counts, and Heather Armstrong, our first EMC delegation guest, at JFK Thursday evening on June 16th, and it was not until 4am Saturday, June 18 that we arrived in Dhaka. Julie Smolyansky, the CEO of Lifeway Foods, joined us the following morning from Chicago.
