Mother’s Day. Not Stay-at-Home Mother’s Day. Not Working Mother’s Day. Why? Well, both of these terms are misleading. To start, being a mom requires work. In fact almost everything a mother does for her family, other people do for employment (but only then it is officially regarded as “work”).

Today’s Every Story Counts writing prompt is something most parents might not think about every day, but imagine how powerful it would be if you did. How would you be a better parent?

Every Mother Counts is rolling out a brand new chapter and since our theme in March is Every Story Counts, we think it’s the perfect time to launch. We’re creating a Global Birth Club – an international gathering of pregnant women from all over the world who are coming together to share their stories through our blog, month-by-month throughout their pregnancies, births and beyond. Our plan is to compare, contrast, support and connect over the universal truths of pregnancy, birth and motherhood, which are similar across the globe, but distinct and unique for every mother.

Terry Tempest Williams, author of “When Women Were Birds,” uses personal narrative to grapple with the questions of what it means to have a “voice,” and the various ways that people express their voices. Terry’s mother, a member of a large Mormon clan in Utah, developed cancer as a result of exposure to a nearby nuclear testing site. After her mother’s death, Terry discovers that she kept a total of 54 personal journals throughout her sickness, but to Terry’s surprise, they are entirely devoid of writing. Terry shared some of her insights on the writing of this memoir in her Q&A with EMC here.

Congratulations to American Kristin Armstrong, 39, who won the gold medal in the Olympic cycling time trial on Wednesday. Kristin previously won gold in Beijing, but this time she had her 2 year old son, Lucas, to cheer her on. In an interview posted at www.teamusa.org, Kristin is candid about the challenges of training as new mom saying, "It's been the hardest journey. It's been a hard 20 months leading up to [this race], a lot of ups and downs." Not only was Kristin breastfeeding when she began her training, but caring for a new baby didn't allow her body the rest necessary to recover from her gruelling training. Her coach Jim Miller said: "This time, it couldn't all be about her. It had to be abut Lucas and he had to be included. ... You normally don't have plastic toys at the start of a stage race."

Olympic mom Kerri Walsh Jennings took home gold in Monday's Beach Volleyball match against the Czech Republic. Jennings and partner Misty May Treanor battled a 21-14, 21-19 victory against their opponents, scoring the gold-medalist duo their 16th consecutive Olympic victory. With Kerri’s continued successes on the court, we wonder how she balances her demanding training and competing schedules and also being a dedicated wife and mother of two children.

Our hearts go out to Paula Radcliffe, the marathon world record holder who just yesterday had to withdraw due to a flare-up of a foot injury. Paula is one of those inspiring women who does it all. She holds the world record in the marathon and is mother to 2 children— Isla (who she delivered after 27 hours of labor) and Raphael. We'll miss watching Paula compete and are sending our thoughts to her. She is still a champion and role model in our eyes though and it is in that spirit that we wanted to share a Q&A she did with us just two weeks ago as she was gearing up for the Games. Thank you, Paula, for being such an example of grace.
