We love this blog posted by our friends at ONE about why having access to modern energy is important. Since our theme this month is Ever Connection Counts, with a particular focus on cell phone technology and maternal health, we thought sharing ONE's blog provided a perfect tie-in.

Last night we attended an event sponsored by our friends at the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) featuring their new campaign, Turning Point: Changing the Course for Adolescent Girls Worldwide. A panel of experts, including our very own Christy Turlington Burns, ONE President Michael Elliott, and ICRW’s Stella Mukasa and Ravi Verma, discussed the global epidemic of violence against women, and particularly young women and girls.

Anthony Fauci, MD, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases is recognized as the expert on PEPFAR and global AIDS relief. More than ten years ago Dr, Fauci led a tight-knit collective of experts that helped create PEPFAR, now recognized as one of the biggest global health success stories ever seen. PEPFAR effectively changed AIDS from a death sentence to a chronic, but treatable disease at what could be considered lightening speed on the governmental timeline. Last week Erin wrote a piece about PEPFAR on its 10 year anniversary and how that same sort of energy is needed for maternal health. She also had the chance to catch up with Dr. Fauci and they chatted about PEPFAR’s early days and what it would take to create that kind of life-altering energy around maternal health.

Like so many of you, I sat up watching the State of the Union address last night. We all had our scorecards - the things we wanted to hear about laced in among the things we were pleasantly surprised to hear about. Personally, I think the strong language on climate issues, the commitment to equal pay for women and the emotional plea on gun control were all highlights. The overriding thought I had as I watched last night was a memory of 10 years ago. In 2003, I wasn't watching my twitter screen. Instead, I was in the office, sitting around a pizza box with Mark Dybul and my other colleagues at what then was called DATA (and now has become the ONE Campaign).

ONE’s new video series illustrates just how little every day Americans know about foreign assistance and the life-saving effects it has on millions of people. Read ONE member Kristen Swanson’s story about how US aid has transformed her and her loved ones’ lives.

World AIDS day was first held in 1988 as the very first designated global health day. It’s now marked annually on December 1st to provide a worldwide opportunity to unite in the fight against HIV, support people living with HIV and commemorate those who’ve died. Currently, about 34 million people live with HIV. Almost 50% are women, 3.3 million are children and in developing countries where HIV/AIDS is rampant, most of them don’t know they’re infected. Often infected mothers will unknowingly transmit HIV/AIDs to their babies during childbirth or through breastfeeding but with proper treatment, an HIV positive mother's risk of passing the virus on to her child drops to 2%.

This year, in thinking about how to gear up our campaign at a time when people think about mothers the most, we felt we could all use a wake up call. That’s why this week we are launching “No Mothers Day.” The campaign centers around a video featuring moms encouraging other moms to join in solidarity by disappearing on May 13th, and by doing so, we will show everyone just how much a mother is missed when she is gone.

For the last several months, discussions around the state of the federal budget and lifting the debt ceiling have dominated the national rhetoric—and the latest news is grim. It is an understatement to say that we are facing fiscal austerity and increasing cutbacks, and all programs and national priorities are going to take a hit. But before breaking for recess, the House Appropriations Committee released a FY2012 State and Foreign Operations Appropriations bill that disproportionately targets global poverty fighting programs and will negatively impact the health of millions of women and their families around the world. Despite the need for fiscal discipline, this bill goes too far and will have negative repercussions on millions of women around the world.

I’m thrilled that “No Woman No Cry,” my documentary on maternal and child health, premiered on the Oprah Winfrey Network last weekend for Mother’s Day. It couldn’t have aired at a better time. I hope that it encouraged women to advocate for improved health for moms all over the world.
Our next generation needs strong, healthy mothers. Motherless children are at greater risk of malnutrition, inadequate schooling, disease and death. An infant whose mother dies within the first six weeks of life is up to 10 times more likely to die before the age of two than an infant whose mother survives.
