The 2012 Olympic games came to a close last night in London. The past two weeks were a rollercoaster of athletic and emotional ups and downs for many athletes, now returning home to proud families. Some athletes have kids waiting to greet their medal-winning mothers. Of the thirteen mothers on the US Olympic team, seven lucky women are leaving London with medals. Kerri Walsh Jennings, Christie Rampone, Candace Parker, and Kristin Armstrong received gold medals, Lashinda Demus (mother of twins!), Tayyiba Haneef-Park and Danielle Scott-Arruda won silvers and Indian boxer, Mary Kom received a bronze. Whether they took home medals or not, it was inspiring to watch mothers from around the world compete in the games!

Cutting for Stone made a splash with readers when it came out in 2009. Not only is is a fantastic read, propelling it to bestseller lists all over, but the topic of the novel hits close to home for us. The story all begins with a maternal death in Ethiopia and tracks the impact that that death had on those left behind—the children, the partners, the friends. Ethiopia continues to be a country of focus for the maternal health community because it is one of the highest burden countries for maternal death and also for life-altering maternal morbidities such as fistula. In 2010, there were 9000 maternal deaths in Ethiopia, leaving women with a 1 in 67 lifetime risk of dying in childbirth. This is a vast improvement in fact- in 1990 there were 950 deaths per 100,000 live births but that number has now dropped to just 350 per 100,000. It's still 350 too many.

Summers are usually jam packed with memories. Whether your kids go to camp, you’re visiting or hosting family, or you’re taking a trip far away, it's important to document these experiences to capture the memories. My friend Charmaine Burden founded her company, Happy Scrappy Books, a few years ago after struggling to do this for her family. We caught up with Charmaine to ask for some scrapbooking tips to help us all do the same.

On Saturday, August 4th, Christy joined Soledad O'Brien and Malaak Compton-Rock at the BlogHer '12 conference in New York City for the "Women Influencers as Change Agents" panel. Christy discussed the importance of advocacy work and what you can do to get involved and help support Every Mother Counts. Here's what Christy asked the BlogHer community to do:

Olympic mom Kerri Walsh Jennings took home gold in Monday's Beach Volleyball match against the Czech Republic. Jennings and partner Misty May Treanor battled a 21-14, 21-19 victory against their opponents, scoring the gold-medalist duo their 16th consecutive Olympic victory. With Kerri’s continued successes on the court, we wonder how she balances her demanding training and competing schedules and also being a dedicated wife and mother of two children.

With the excitement of the opening of the 2012 Summer Olympics in the air today, Every Mother Counts would like to give shout-outs to a few Olympian moms whose inspirational stories, accomplishments, and personal achievements motivate us each day to do what we do for moms around the world. They symbolize so much for us all and in watching them achieve their dreams of being in the Olympic Games they are also encouraging us to reach our goals, and to fight for what we believe in. Like many of us, these women are juggling demanding schedules and managing their children's daily routines. And while the jury is still out on whether women really can have it all, these women are proving daily that they can be dedicated mothers AND world champions. What better way to celebrate the Summer of Sisterhood than cheering them on. Please join us in following these Olympic Moms. Together, we can make a difference.
