Attending four pre-natal/ante-natal care (ANC) visits and delivering at a health unit is a challenge for many pregnant women in Uganda. Currently, about 25% of pregnant women in Uganda attend all four recommended ANC visits, with about 56% delivering at a health facility (Uganda Demographic Household Survey, 2011). Last week we closed out our Mozilla Firefox Challenge with a really nice, $17,152 total. What does that mean for mothers who need us? That means your donations will buy 780 Mama kits for women in Uganda. What is a Mama kit? A Mama kit contains the basic supplies a woman needs to deliver safely. In many parts of the world, women are expected to supply their own medical equipment, especially if they’re delivering at home or bring money to pay for the use of a clinic’s supplies.

Boniconsilla Komugisha (Bonnie) is a nurse midwife at St. Ambrose Charity Health Centre in Kibaale, Uganda, which is one of the projects supported by Saving Mothers-Giving Life. Bonnie is in charge of the voucher program that enables pregnant women to get to the clinic when they’re in labor. We visited with Bonnie during our visit to Uganda in November where we chatted about the upcoming holidays. This is what Bonnie shared with us about how they celebrate the holidays in Uganda.
