Courtney Martin is a writer, speaker, editor and all around powerhouse of a woman. We saw her speak at TED Women a few years ago and were completely impressed with her. She had just written a book, Do It Anyway: The New Generation of Activists (Beacon Press, 2010) and was among the founding editors of a site/movement called Feministing. She sent us an email describing that trip and we’re sharing it here.

We mentioned in our February kick-off that we’d be paying close attention to our government leaders and making sure they keep women at the heart of the political process. It appears, President Obama was thinking along the same lines and in fact, he got a head start on us. On Thursday (January 30th), he signed a Presidential Memorandum to strengthen and expand US government capacity and coordination across all agencies to better promote gender equality and empower women and girls.

Every Mother Counts is feeling the love as we enter February. Our theme this month is Every Heart Counts and we’ll be embracing all kinds of matters of the heart. Our biggest focuses will be on how heart health impacts pregnancy, motherhood and women’s long-term health, but we’re concentrating just as hard on the importance of keeping women at the heart of our political processes.

We’ve talked a lot lately about the value of yoga and meditation to improve your life, health and ability to connect with the world around you. Starting a yoga practice seems pretty straightforward – find a class, rent a DVD, buy a mat and get on with it. Learning to meditate – not so much. There are dozens of ways to meditate from chanting, breath-awareness and mindfulness practices to staring into a crackling fire or knitting. So how do you get started? With a few simple techniques.

Despite our focus on global reach and far away places, I’m reminded time and again how very small the world is. My recent conversation with actress, Amy Brenneman revolved around her recent trip to Peru with CARE (one of our favorite humanitarian organizations), and served as a reminder that the world is only as big as you want it to be and most of it is common ground.

Our January theme, Every New Beginning Counts motivated us to stay committed to achieving our goals in 2013. There were so many great resources, ideas, and people who graced our blog this month. They inspired us, gave us food for thought and sparked conversations. It’s hard to just narrow it down to a handful, but these are our picks this month for yet one more new blog section: 5 Women We Love

There are countless reasons why people start a yoga practice. For some, it’s about health, stress reduction or spirituality. For those who make yoga their lifestyle, their practice is all that plus an opportunity to serve the world from a place of unity, compassion and clarity. For Seane Corn, yoga instructor and founder of Off The Mat, Into The World (OTM) yoga is all about service because of its power to create great change.OTM uses the power of yoga to inspire conscious, sustainable activism and ignite grassroots social change by facilitating personal empowerment through leadership trainings, community collaboration, and initiating local and global service projects. We spoke with Seane about how her practice evolved to become a global platform for service.

We aren't exactly surprised at this news considering Senator Kerry's track record, history on the foreign relations board and global perspective and experience. We are optimistic and confident that Senator Kerry's confirmation means the steps taken in recent years to secure women's rights, health and economic empowerment will keep moving forward. We wish you all the best, Senator Kerry. We know, you've got our backs.

Debra Pascali-Bonaro. LCCE, BDT/PDT(DONA) is the heart of the gentle birth movement. She’s the director and creator of the documentaries, Orgasmic Birth and Organic Birth. She trains doulas and educates childbirth professionals and new parents all over the world about the powerful role birth plays in women’s lives when they’re permitted to experience it fully. Debra launched her new website this month to tie together the many different yet interconnected facets of her work. Since we’ve been focusing on new beginnings, we wanted to give a shout-out to a woman who’s work we so admire and a website we think is excellent.
