Our global birth club is growing and we’re delighted to be welcoming new members. It’s starting to feel like a legit mothers’ group now that Eka, our newest member from Indonesia (who came to us through our friend Robin Lim’s clinic, Bumi Sehat, in Bali) brings our numbers to six. Here’s Eka’s story:

All month we’ve been talking about the connection between cell phone technology and healthcare in the developing world. For a lot of pregnant women here in the US, we're inundated with information from friends, books and websites like BabyCenter about what we should and shouldn't do during pregnancy, when we should see a provider, etc. But for many women, access to that sort of basic information is hard to come by.

Back in 1970 when America was celebrating its first designated Earth Day, subjects like recycling and environmentalism were visionary and radical. Earth Day was a “hippie thing” and the people observing it were treated to hefty doses of skepticism and ridicule.

Circle of Health International (COHI) is currently traveling in Amman, Jordan where they're celebrating 5 years since the beginning of Midwives for Peace - a unique alliance formed between Palestinian and Israeli midwives who share their passion for improving maternal health. COHI works with women and their communities in times of crisis and disaster to ensure access to quality reproductive, maternal, and newborn care. Based in Austin, Texas, COHI has worked in locations around the world such as Haiti, Nepal, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, Jordan, and Syria. There's been so much written this week about the heroic efforts made by healthcare workers in response to the bombings in Boston. Doctors, nurses and support staff all over the world face these kinds of challenges every day, with various levels of resources. Unfortunately what resources there are often go to the 'haves', leaving the 'have nots' behind.
