After a month of responses to our Every Story Counts project, we’ve woven together the thoughts from hundreds of creative, insightful, grateful, wise and funny women (and one man). What’s the story, the story of us?

Last week EMC took a field trip to the Developing Families Center, a one-stop shop for pregnant moms and families housed in a former Safeway supermarket in Washington, DC. We met with Ruth Watson Lubic, nurse, anthropologist, and midwife extraordinaire. Dr. Ruth, as she's known, has left a significant mark on maternal and newborn healthcare in the U.S. At 86 years old, she has a list of awards as long as my arm, but she might best be known as the founder of the National Association of Childbearing Centers (NACC) (which is spearheading the development of birth centers in the U.S.), and for running Childbirth Connection for 25 years.

From the moment you know you’re pregnant (and even before) you’ll be showered with advice – some good and some, not so much. Many of us count on our own mothers to help us sort the good advice from the nonsense and to provide the real pearls of wisdom. This weekend, Wei Wei and I attended the second Zooma race of 2013 in Austin, Texas. Zooma hosts all-women running events in resort settings all over the country, providing women get-away-weekend opportunities to race, bond, enjoy spa services and share their passion for running. This weekend hosted about 1300 women.
