Our Global Grantee Partners
Our strategy internationally

Over the past four decades, global efforts have reduced the number of maternal deaths by half—a significant achievement in the movement for maternal health. Yet, about 260,000 maternal deaths a year is still far too high, and every preventable loss remains one loss too many.
We are not on track to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 3, which targets reducing maternal mortality to 70 deaths per 100,000 live births by 2030. Approximately 90% of maternal deaths occur in low- and lower-middle-income countries, with Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia together accounting for 87% of these cases. Most maternal deaths could be prevented with increased access to skilled birth attendants, greater investment in the health care system, and by addressing social and systemic barriers that prevent women from accessing care.
To accelerate progress in maternal health, we are focused on strengthening community-based care by growing and diversifying the maternity care workforce, while improving healthcare delivery to ensure access to the highest attainable standard of care.
