H.R. 1318/S. 1112: A Last Push for the 115th Congress!
Since its original introduction in 2011, Every Mother Counts has been a supporter of the Maternal Health Accountability Act + Preventing Maternal Deaths Act. Reintroduced in the spring of 2017, this bill has gained significant bipartisan support, making strong headway in Congress.
The Maternal Health Accountability Act + Preventing Maternal Deaths Act would direct the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to establish a program to make grants to states to:
- Review pregnancy-related and pregnancy-associated deaths (maternal deaths)
- Establish and maintain a Maternal Mortality Review Committee (MMRC)
- Develop and implement recommendations in order to improve the quality of maternal care, &
- Develop uniform procedures that reflect the best practices identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
This November, EMC, along with 80+ organizations urged Congress to bring H.R. 1318/S. 1112 to the House and Senate floor for a full vote before the end of this calendar year.
